What “Plastic in the Loop” Means

Unilever explained how there is a lot of plastic pollution in the environment. The last thing they want is for their bottles to contribute to the waste. While this is a huge problem, plastic is still a very useful material that helps maintain the safety and distribution of many of the hair products we all know and love. Plus, the material has a lower carbon footprint than many alternative materials. In an effort to reduce plastic, Unilever said that they would keep all “plastic in the loop”—meaning in the economy and out of the environment—by 2025. This means all of the plastic produced by the company will be reused, recycled or composted. By doing this, Unilever will reduce their virgin plastic use by 50 percent. They also plan to collect and process more plastic and packaging than they sell. How incredible is that? For you, this means you’ll start seeing more multi-use packs, like reusable and refillable formats. You’ll also start to see ‘no plastic’ solutions, which include alternative packaging materials and naked products. We’re so excited about Unilever’s plans to reduce plastic pollution, and we can’t wait to see these new innovations throughout stores over the next few years!

What you can do to help reduce plastic

While it’s important that the brands we buy are conscious of their plastic use, it’s also important that we as consumers are too. Keep scrolling to find out our favorite ways to reduce plastic in our hair care routine.

Bring your own bag to reduce plastic.

I know, this may not sound like it relates to your hair care routine, but think about it: Every time you go to your local drugstore or mall to pick up a new shampoo or hair serum, there’s a good chance you get a plastic bag to take your brand new product home in. Trust us, that adds up quickly! Next time you’re heading to the store to buy a new hair mask, shampoo or any product, really, make sure you bring your reusable bag with you!

Buy from brands that help reduce plastic.

Love Beauty and Planet is one of our favorite environmentally-friendly brands. Did you know all of the brand’s bottles are made from recycled materials? This is why their bottles aren’t 100 percent see-through. The brand also hopes to make their bottle caps out of 100 percent recycled materials by 2021. Some of the reasons we love Love Beauty and Planet is also because of their efforts to help the environment, and that their products are “clean,” yet still extremely effective. A few of our favorites are: Love Beauty and Planet Smooth and Serene Argan Oil and Lavender Shampoo and Conditioner set, Love Beauty and Planet Rosehip & Patchouli Extend Dry Shampoo, and Love Beauty and Planet Hope and Repair Coconut Ylang & Ylang 3-in-1 Benefit Oil. We love the shampoo and conditioner set because it’s great for keeping your strands smooth and frizz-free. Plus, it has a very relaxing scent! The dry shampoo is one of our favorites because it does a great job eliminating excess oil and adding an extra bounce to your hair! The hair oil is perfect for use on wet or dry hair. The product nourishes your strands, keeps your hair smooth, and helps prevent split ends–it’s truly an all-in-one product! What is your favorite way to reduce plastic in your hair care routine?
