5 Steps to Detangling Thick Hair

If you’re having trouble detangling thick hair, then look no further: We’ve got some of the best tips around to keep your hair tangle-free! Check out this 5-step guide to keeping your thick tresses smooth, silky and free of damaging knots.

Brush your hair before showering

Don’t step into the shower without brushing your hair! Think about it: You’re scrubbing and pulling on your hair when shampooing and conditioning, which can lead to even more tangles. Also, your hair is more prone to breakage when it’s wet, so brushing out rough tangles in the shower isn’t a great idea.

Use a detangling brush

Not all brushes are created equal! When detangling thick hair, you need to use the proper brush to prevent breakage. Detangling brushes glide through tangles much easier than other brush types, which is why they’re worth the investment. One of our favorite brushes is Ibiza CX2 Paddle Hair Brush. This brush smoothens strands while the wooden pins massage and stimulate the scalp, and it has antimicrobial, hypo-allergenic properties.

Brush the other way

Brushing from ends to root, or tugging hair from the ends and going up incrementally, is a much safer alternative for your strands. Starting from your roots and going down can cause much more breakage, splitting, and overall damage to your strands, so try starting a the very end and working your way up. You should also spritz your hair with some detangling spray to help get those tough knots out. Bed Head by TIGI Beach Freak Moisturizing Detangler Spray is a great choice for an extra tangle-fighting boost.

Section Your Hair

When you’re detangling thick hair, you should always section your hair when brushing. Putting your delicate locks in sections helps ease the tension the brush puts on your hair, making it easier on you and your hair to get through tangles.

Condition, condition, condition

The best way to keeping your locks tangle-free is by conditioning your hair. Conditioning your locks leaves your hair smooth and silky while helping prevent any tangling and damage. Leave-in conditioners are a great way to give your hair smoothing moisture outside of the shower. One of our top leave-in conditioners for aiding tangled locks is Suave Professionals Honey Infusion 10-in-1 Leave-In Conditioner. It’s infused with rich honey to keep your strands smooth and in control all day long.
